On 7th June 2025 a group of 18 avid supporters took on the challenge of trekking to the summit of Mount Snowdon … at night! Our team of enthusiastic ICP Support champions had one main aim - to raise as much money as possible for our small charity doing big work.
The highest mountain in England and Wales, Snowdon's Welsh name is Yr Wyddfa, reputedly the burial place of a mythical giant. A popular summit trek by day-time, it formed a real challenge by night.
Armed with waterproofs, backpacks and head torches, we began our journey at 10.30pm on 7th June. We began our ascent following the Llanberis Path, using our torches to light up the path as we walked. Trekking up at night was a very different experience than during the day; our senses soon grew used to the dark and the silence and remoteness became quite eerie at times. Once we reached the Halfway House the gradient became much steeper and we knew we were not far from the summit. The funds we were raising for our small but mighty charity pushed us to keep going until we reached the top, standing at 1085m high!
Braving poor weather conditions and limited visibility, we finally reached the summit shortly after 2am on Sunday, 8th June. The weather was against us throughout the night as we battled heavy rain and fierce winds, making our journey increasingly harder. However, standing at the summit of Mount Snowdon by moonlight was definitely an unforgettable experience!
After some time to experience the summit (it was incredibly cold and windy at the top!) we returned to Llanberis the same way. The sky started to lighten on our way down, and we were able to enjoy the wonderful views. As the sun began to rise, we were amazed by what we had climbed in the dark!
It was a welcome delight to see the sunrise from the mountain slopes as we continued our descent. Witnessing the spectacular landscapes opening up before us as the day grew lighter was a magical and unforgettable experience. The descent was slightly quicker but still tiring and hard on the knees!
Sheer determination and teamwork got us through this challenge and we were back on flat ground by 5.30am, physically broken and exhausted.
(Ascent approx. 4 hours; descent approx. 3 hours)
We returned to our hotel base for a big celebration breakfast! After saying our farewells to our fellow trekkers, we will finally headed home, tired but very elated!
This physical challenge was all about endurance, fitness and teamwork - we worked together so that everyone could complete the challenge at their own pace and achieve their personal goal. Each and every member of our team pushed boundaries to meet these goals and over 40,000 steps later accomplished a huge personal achievement - all in aid of ICP Support.
“We did it! So much tougher than expected, with rain, poor visibility and bitter winds, but every step was worth it for such an amazing charity. Highlights/lowlights include not being able to see more than a metre in front, explaining 'intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy' on a 34% gradient hill, crazy winds on the summit, delirious giggles on the final stretch and over 40,000 steps done. Thank you so much to everyone for your donation, every single one adds up!” (Natalie, Team Snowdon member)
